Expiation for fasting

The expiation for fasting is to compensate for the deficiency and purify the soul.

The expiation for missed fasts is a legitimate means of making up for missed obligatory fasts (the month of Ramadan) in specific circumstances, and it varies depending on the reason and excuse. Its purpose is to rectify the deficiency and purify the soul, and it is a form of charity towards those in need.

1. Expiation for missed fasts (for those unable to make up the missed days)

A "fidyah" (expiation) is required for someone who breaks their fast during Ramadan and is unable to make it up later due to a permanent excuse.

  • The elderly: those for whom fasting is extremely difficult.
  • People with chronic illnesses: those who are not expected to be cured and are medically prohibited from fasting.
  • The amount: Feeding one poor person for each day he broke his fast.

2. Expiation for delaying the makeup of missed prayers

If a person breaks their fast during Ramadan due to a valid excuse (such as travel or a temporary illness), and then delays making up the missed days without a legitimate excuse until the following Ramadan arrives:

  • The obligation: To fast the days he missed (make-up) + to feed a poor person for each day (expiation for the delay).
